Dear Parents,
I want to thank you for trusting me to work with your child and support them on their therapeutic journey. Understanding what to expect during therapy can help both you and your child feel more comfortable, especially if your child is hesitant or reluctant to attend sessions.
Building Trust Is Key
The foundation of effective therapy is a trusting relationship. For many children, developing this trust takes time. My initial focus will be on creating a safe and comfortable space, establishing rapport, and helping your child feel secure. This is an essential first step before they are ready to open up and actively work on their therapy goals. While it may seem like progress is slow at first, this stage is crucial for meaningful, lasting growth.
Patience With Reluctance
If your child is hesitant to attend therapy, it’s important to remember that the process may take a bit longer. Forcing deep conversations before your child feels safe can actually be counterproductive. My approach emphasizes patience and understanding, meeting your child where they are emotionally and allowing them to engage at their own pace.
Supporting Your Child
As a parent, it can be challenging to watch this process, especially when you want your child to receive support right away. Please know that taking the time to build trust is completely normal and a critical part of therapy. Your child’s comfort and willingness to share will grow over time.
Your role in reinforcing that therapy is a positive and safe space is invaluable. Encourage your child gently, validate their feelings, and celebrate the small steps they take along the way.
If you have questions or concerns during this process, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I look forward to working together to support your child’s growth, confidence, and well-being.
Operation HOPE is here to support your child’s journey.
