At our equine-assisted psychotherapy program, the safety and well-being of our clients, staff, and horses always come first. Because our sessions involve working closely with horses and often take place outdoors or in environments affected by weather conditions, there are times when we must cancel or postpone appointments due to extreme weather.

While we understand that schedule changes can be inconvenient, these decisions are made with everyone’s safety in mind.

What Counts as Extreme Weather?

Extreme weather can include:

  • Excessive heat or dangerous heat index conditions
  • Extreme cold or severe wind chill
  • Thunderstorms and lightning
  • Heavy rain, snow, or ice
  • High winds or other severe weather conditions

These conditions can create unsafe situations not only for clients and staff but also for the horses who are an essential part of the therapeutic process.

Why Weather Matters in Equine-Assisted Therapy

Horses are highly sensitive animals whose health and comfort can be affected by extreme temperatures and severe weather. Just as people can experience heat exhaustion, dehydration, or discomfort during harsh weather conditions, horses can also be placed at risk.

Additionally, severe weather can impact footing, visibility, and overall safety around the barn and therapy areas. Our goal is to create a therapeutic environment that is physically and emotionally safe for everyone involved.

What Happens If a Session Is Canceled?

If weather conditions require us to cancel a session, clients will be notified as soon as possible. We closely monitor weather forecasts and make decisions based on current conditions and safety recommendations.

When a session is canceled due to extreme weather:

  • Clients will not be charged for the canceled appointment.
  • The session will be rescheduled at a mutually convenient time.
  • We will work with you to find the earliest available appointment that meets your needs.

Thank You for Your Understanding

We appreciate the flexibility and understanding of our clients and families when weather-related cancellations occur. These decisions are never made lightly. By prioritizing safety, we can ensure that both our clients and our equine partners remain healthy, comfortable, and ready to engage in meaningful therapeutic work.

Thank you for helping us create a safe environment where healing and growth can continue for everyone involved.
